OUR SOLUTIONS TO ADDRESS THE ORTING VALLEY TRAFFIC CRISIS
WSDOT: WHAT THE WSDOT CAN DO
- Adopt the Pierce County EIS (Environmental Impact Study) that recommends a signaled intersection at SR162/128th St. E (Tehaleh highway)
- Serious impacts to commuters, businesses, farms, and valley residents caused by roundabouts are too significant
- Maintain existing signals at all SR162 major intersections
- To provide for safe breaks in traffic for business and residential access and egress
- Widen SR162 from Sumner to Orting to add two-way turn lane and shoulders
- Widening to four lanes is cost prohibitive and will not receive funding
- Our solution is an achievable option (within current right-of-way)
- Benefits are obvious to commuters, businesses, and residents of this corridor
PIERCE COUNTY: WHAT THE COUNTY CAN DO
We think that Pierce County owes the valley residents, businesses, and SR162 commuters solutions to the traffic crisis created by the Tehaleh highway they approved
Note: The County has been engaged and supportive over the past year and we look forward to a continued relationship with them.
- Pressure WSDOT to adopt the recommendations of the intersection EIS for SR162/128th St E.
- Impacts to commuters, businesses and residents caused by roundabouts too significant for this valley transportation corridor
- Meet the County obligation to provide an east/west corridor to South Hill Puyallup that was originally a part of the proposal for the new highway.
- Military Road cannot be widened to accomodate that traffic
- We recommend a new roadway from the intersection of SR162/128th St E, scaling the hillside and connecting to 122nd Ave E
- 122 Ave E should be improved from Shaw road south to 176 St E
- Add two-way turn and signaled intersections where needed
- Needs to be alternative corridor to SR161 and SR162 to move new taffic from communities to the south
- Extend 122nd Ave E connecting it to 200th St E
- New developments are proposed that will use a north/south transportation corridor
- Make improvements to valley arterials paralleling SR162
- McCutcheon Road and Riverside Road
COMMUTERS, BUSINESSES, FARMS, AND RESIDENTS: WHAT THEY CAN DO
- RECOGNIZE the reality that improving SR162 into a four lane highway will not happen
- The cost of the project is too extreme due to necessary right-of-way acquisitions and greater water runoff management issues
- UNITE our voice with common targets
- Widen SR162 to add two-way turn lane with shoulders
- No roundabouts on the SR162 corridor between Sumner and Orting
- Create a new east/west transportation corridor for Tehaleh traffic
- Create an improved north/south transportation corridor (122 Ave E)
- Improve arterials that parallel SR162 between 128th St E and Sumner
