Please press for funding the widening of SR162 between Sumner and Orting. The current 60 foot right-of-way is adequate to add a center two-way turn lane and wider shoulders. Currently there are a number of center two-way turn lane sections from development mitigations. Something has to be done before the four lane highway from Tehaleh opens in 2025. We are gridlocked now.
Please work to provide the WSDOT designated funding to add a center two-way turn lane and wider shoulders on SR162 between Sumner and Orting using the existing right-of-way. This is the least expensive temporary fix to what is and will be one of the most congested transportation corridors in the state. Please help us; no other affordable solutions are available to us.
With the additional 1000 vehicles per peak hour coming in 2025, it is critical that you negotiate designated funding to widening SR162 with a center two-way turn lane and wider shoulders between Sumner and Orting. The new four lane highway from Tehaleh will feed a two lane rural corridor with these added vehicles. The center lane will address safety concerns and delays from highway access and egress to the 140 private and public streets, driveways, and businesses located on this stretch of SR162. Please force the funding for this only affordable option we have.
Please work to create funding for the widening of SR162 from Sumner to Orting to consist of adding a two-way turn lane and wider shoulders. Valley residents and valley commuters must be concerned about their future family safety. Highway safety is becoming a greater threat due to the added volume of traffic on SR162 (expected to more than double). Lahar possibility threatens all who live and commute this valley. Adding an additional two-way turn lane can provide another evacuation lane that will save hundreds of lives in the case of a lahar. We now have a warning system but only a single two lane corridor to escape to higher ground. Please find the funding for this affordable and necessary improvement.
Our Puyallup/Orting Valley remains some of the most fertile farmland in the country and is active in agricultural activity. The survival of our farms is at stake from the dramatic increase in traffic on the SR162 corridor between Sumner and Orting. Congestion will discourage the customers from visiting the farms during harvest and seasonal business periods. The least we can do is provide an access/egress two-way turn lane to allow them to survive. Widening the highway to add the center turn lane and widening shoulders is needed now. We need to look at more than intersection analysis in dealing with SR162 issues.

I recognize that you are not to blame for our situation and I appreciate your support thus far, however, now we are desperate for this only affordable improvement. The valley will still be gridlocked during commuting hours, but it will be safer for access and egress and reduce slowdowns from turning vehicles.
Please do everything in your power to help us at least do this much to lessen the impacts of Tehaleh traffic on this already over-loaded transportation corridor.
Finally, I thank you for everything that I know you can do for us who commute and live along this SR162 corridor. We are currently experiencing an over-capacity transportation corridor, the only corridor for the valley. Doubling current numbers seems impossible to us and it is frightening to hear there is no remedy planned for it. This minor widening is only a band-aid when sutures’ are needed, but one necessary for us to survive the coming gridlock.
